Film Insperation

The Duchess
Year-2008
Director-Saul Dibb
Costume Designer-Michael O'conner
The duchess was slightly earlier then the 19th century but i thought it was a good strating point to see how the dress changed from the 18th to 19th century as you can see the hip buckets gave a more angular shape to the skirt. The more elaberate and excentrate the better. The 19th century had a more subtle style in comparisim.

Jane Austens Pride and Pedjudice/Emma.
Above are a slection of costumes from pride and predjudice and Emma. Austens books were set in the regency period the era my first dress was set in with the high empire waist lines and draping skirts. featuring lots of creams yellos browns and creams.

The Yong Victoria
Year-2009
Director-Jean-Marc Vallée
Costume Designer-Sandy Powell

This film was quite interesting it showed the shape of the dress changing over the period. As you can see from the above design when Victoria was a teenage the dresses had the puffed sleeved and a slightly higher waist line then the later dresses in her reign. The necklines became lower, the waistline moved down slightly emphasising a slim waist and curvaceous hips.

The change in Victorians style of dress also showed her growing up the dresses became more fitting the fabrics richer with less pastel colours and lace and more jewels and embellishment. Of course these dresses are the more expensive and the upper class end of the scale.
I love the below designs, I feel  Powell really captures the siluete. These dresses have the same bell like shape of my third dress. The panneled skirts and tight fitting top are also the same the sleeves differ obveiously but sleeves  changed many times over the period. Also sleeves varied for different occasions especialy in length. Usualy longer sleeves were worn in the day time and short sleeves at night.
