19th Century Cutting.
For this project I am looking at the cut of women’s clothing throughout the 19th century. I will research into the different styles and changes over the period. I will pick four designs from books based on the 19th century and create four toils. Each toil will look at a different year in the 19th century and should show the progression of the cut. Each toil will produce a new challenge whether it be using striped fabric or creating Nemours garments for one outfit. I will keep a blog alongside of this project showing my progression throughout. I hope that after the completion of this project I will have a greater understanding of the 19th century. I also hope it will help improve my skills of cutting and cutting on the stand. I hope this project will increase my confidence when deciphering a pattern. It will also improve my knowledge of 19th century under ware how it changed and how the shape and style of under ware can affect the shape of a garment. I’m sure this project will be a challenge for me and improve my time management as this is the first time I have had to produce lots of garments for one project. Making toils will also be more effective for my learning then finished garments, as I often feel I depend upon my quality of detail rather than the cut. Producing a toil means working on the quality of the cut alone as no details will be added besides a small sample perhaps.
